“Kimber” Strong Desire (Stay Thirsty X Defrere)
2018 Grey Thoroughbred Gelding
This is your “been there, done that, got the T-shirt” guy of a lifetime! DO ANYTHING WITH HIM!
After a short-lived and lackluster career as a racehorse in NY, Kimber transitioned into life with a hunter trainer associated with CANTER NY. There, he learned the ropes of being a 2’6” hunter - even giving lessons! When he found a home in Michigan, his mom took him on all kinds of adventures. From trail riding in the MI state parks, galloping on the beach of Silver Lake Sand Dunes, local day trips, camping - he’s done it all! All this experience before he turns 10!
Kimber is incredibly kind under saddle. He has beautiful, easy-to-ride gaits that would be right at home in the hunter hack. He easily finds his cute frame, connects with the hand, and finds a great rhythm. He jumps courses beautifully - the higher the jumps go, the easier it feels for him! He is developing a flying change, but has a very appropriate simple change for the hunter ring. He hacks out like a dream (Obviously! With all his experience outdoors!) and jumps natural elements without batting an eye. Since being in our program, he has had several juniors of different age/height/temperament on him - and has done great with them all.
Right now, Kimber has the longest and thickest mane we’ve ever seen on a Thoroughbred! We just don’t have the heart to trim it up, its too beautiful! His tail is also long and gorgeous, it touches the ground when he’s standing still. His previous owner took immaculate care of him (full exams every 6 months) - so his joints, tendons and feet are in perfect shape. We also recently flexed him upper and lower, and he trotted very clean. He needs no maintenance and wears no shoes currently. He isn’t messy - so even though he is a grey, he stays very clean!
Kimber would be an excellent choice for someone who is looking to show and also enjoy their horse in other aspects - he would also be a fantastic horse for a family to share or a mount for a lesson/lease program. He is a straight shooter under saddle, and needs very little input to “put himself together” in a beautiful way (perfect for more timid but ambitious and capable riders). Can’t see the distance? Don’t worry about it, he’ll solve that and make it look presentable, even if it’s pretty tight.

His pedigree is incredibly star studded! Sired by Stay Thirsty, winner of the 2011 Travers Stakes (G1) and the 2012 Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) with total career earnings just shy of 2 MILLION. Still one of the leading CA studs, he has proven to produce very nice offspring year after year. Its no wonder - Stay Thirsty carries A.P. Indy, Storm Bird, Northern Dancer, Seattle Slew and Secretariat!
Kimber enjoys a simple routine here at home. He lives inside or out, has free access to hay, plenty of turnout with buddies, gets along with other horses, and is fairly low on the totem pole. He’s ridden a few days a week, with a walkabout at the end of most rides. He was awesome for his braiding and “school portraits” - like he was born to pose! He bathes, cross ties, ties, trailers, stands, etc.
Kimber would be suitable for:
Hunters/Equitation
Low-Mid level Eventing
Low-Mid level Dressage
Fox Hunting
Trail Riding/Camping
General Western (Ranch, etc)

FAQs
-
He has no major vices.
He travels well, loads, bathes, clips, stands for vet/farrier, lunges, stands in the cross ties, ties, leads in and out from turnout, etc.
However, at some spots in the barn, he gets somewhat anxious when he’s alone and everyone else is outside. This seems to get better in some grooming spots. This resolves when any horse is in the barn with him. This is not at all an issue under saddle or lunging.
-
He goes well in a double-jointed D-ring snaffle.
He currently wears a Stubben Imperator all-purpose.
-
He has free choice grass hay 24/7.
He gets 3 quarts of Triple Crown Growth twice a day.
-
An average of 5. He doesn’t have much of a spook response and she’s calm about most visual and audio stimuli that other horses would find scary. He responds well to new experiences, and is highly adaptable. He hacks out well on a long rein. He does not bolt/rear/buck. He’s very quiet under saddle and can take a lot of leg.
