“Wilson” Bahama Channel (English Channel X Awesome Again)

Wilson is the epitome of a classic-type Thoroughbred: it’s like he stepped out of a 1960’s posh equestrian lifestyle magazine. From his beautiful, thick neck, gentlemanly head, plush back, excellent (rock solid!) feet, thick, wavy mane and tail, and a knowing, soft twinkle in his eye - he is your partner in a National Velvet-style fantasy. His presence is calm and wise, he’s soothing to the soul!

Wilson has life experience (been there, seen that) - and is ready to head in a multitude of directions. He would be considered a “war horse” by most, having aged out of the track after  winning a quarter of a million dollars over the course of his career, with zero injuries or soundness concerns, and firmly cemented as a favorite among staff. Now he has proven that he will be a fabulous riding horse, while schooling dressage basics, small arena jumps, cross country, and hacking out low and slow! He has also proven himself Junior safe and approved. He is safe to be ridden with other horses around, and is calm in a busy barn with kids, music, dogs, cats, and cars. He stands at the mounting block like a statue. Wilson is a perfect all-around guy, loves the slow life these days, and as his name suggests, he wants to take you to “Bermuda, Bahama….”

If you are looking for a buddy that you could be competitive with one day, and casual with the next, this could be the perfect guy for you. Judges will swoon over him, he travels very well, and you’ll still have a fun-loving guy to hang with once you’re back home from the show. He is accepting of a lot of leg and hand, and you don’t need anything more than a simple snaffle. He is hard to spook, stands beautifully in the isle, loves to be pampered, and is the biggest cuddle bug! He asks for a snuggle every time he’s bridled and before mounting. He feels great to sit on, and can be described as a bit “lazy” at times.

One of the reasons Wilson was an instant “yes” for our program is his breeding! He is sired by English Channel, who was also a classic, old-school Thoroughbred: smaller in stature, excellent under a variety of conditions, noble head, consistent, high-preforming, hardy, and friendly to humans. He won 5.3 million over the course of his career, and collected a hefty stud fee of 35 thousand.

Since joining the program, Wilson has been learning classical basics (bending, balance, flexion), hacking out, jumping small arena courses, schooling cross country jumps, starting on water elements, ridden by a junior, and work with other horses in the arena.

Recently, Wilson’s shoes were removed and his feet are holding up wonderfully. He flexes sound, both upper and lower. His airways are clear, his eyes are bright, his feet test negative, and his back palpates clean. He has recently had his teeth floated without sedation, just standing in the cross ties (no major findings). He is UTD on coggins/vax.

  • He has no major vices.

    He travels well, loads, bathes, stands for vet/farrier, lunges, stands in the cross ties, ties, leads in and out from turnout, etc.

  • He goes well in a rubber double-jointed D-ring snaffle.

    He currently wears a MW Stubben Imperator all-purpose and a MW Kentaur Artemis.

  • He has free choice grass hay 24/7 and 2 flakes of pure alfalfa a day.

    He gets 1lb of Tribute Balancer and 1lb of Tribute Senior Sport 2x a day, plus 1lb of Tribute Kalm Ultra and 1lb alfalfa pellets 1x a day.

  • An average of 5. He doesn’t have much of a spook response and she’s calm about most visual and audio stimuli that other horses would find scary. He responds well to new experiences, and is highly adaptable. He hacks out well on a long rein. He does not bolt/rear/buck. He’s quiet/lazy under saddle and can take a lot of leg, but he does get more forward during jumping.

  • He is English Channel X Awesome Again.

  • He has intact feet, cool, tight legs and joints, an open chest, clear lungs, clear eyes, and has recently jogged off sound for flexion of upper and lower limbs. He has shown no signs of lameness or loss of function. He has no history of lameness, illness, injury or colic. No physical flaws have been observed.
